What is the Census

The census is a total enumeration of all persons living within the United States occurring every ten years. The 2010 census is a paper survey that every US address will receive by mail or in person in mid-March 2010. It is not an internet or telephone survey.

Why is the Census Important

  • Census data is the most reliable, comprehensive, and best source of data on the American population.

  • Census data determines the apportionment of the House of Representatives. Apportionment is the process of dividing the 435 seats in the US House of Representatives among the 50 states.

  • Census data determines how much funding for federal programs such as those administered by the Department of Transportation is distributed annually to jurisdictions based on population counts.

  • Census data is an integral part of transportation planning analysis activities, including general descriptive analyses, demographic simulations, and travel demand model forecasting.

The Census Process

  • Every household in America is delivered a short 10-question form

  • You must fill in the form to account for everyone living at your address as of April 1, 2010

  • Mail back the form as soon as possible with the prepaid envelope provided
